“Every baby is different and on their own timeline. Don’t worry about comparing your baby to others.”

Interview with Charlotte’s mom:

What was your pregnancy like?

“Overall my pregnancy was relatively low key until my water broke unexpectedly when I was 31 weeks.  Charlotte had decided to come early and she was born on July 6, 2017 at 32 weeks weighing 3 lbs. 12 oz.  She was two months early and spent 10 days in the NICU and about 4 weeks in the Special Care Nursery at Texas Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas.”

What was it like seeing your baby for the first time?

“Since Charlotte was a very early surprise, it was such a whirlwind meeting her for the first time.  I had her via C section so not only was that experience a bit intense, it was the craziest feeling of overwhelming happiness when I heard her cry and saw her for a few seconds before the NICU team had to take her away.”

Did your baby look like what you expected?

“When your baby is in the NICU, you have to get to know your baby through photos. I would spend hours staring at the baby photos we were able to take while visiting her.  Every photo we had showed us a small sliver of her personality and her transformation was really amazing.”

What have the first few days with the baby at home been like?

“Once we were able to bring Charlotte home, it was an easier transition from the hospital than I had anticipated. One positive of having your baby in the NICU is your baby is already on a schedule.  This was extremely helpful as we adjusted to our new life with Charlotte at home and being full time parents for the first time.

What is your favorite little detail about your baby?

“My favorite detail about Charlotte is her hair. the doctor saw that she had a lot of hair during an ultrasound and we were stumped. Both Justin and I were very bald as babies so we were wonderfully perplexed by how much hair she had when she was born.

Any advice for other new moms out there?

“If you can, build a support network of friends and family who have had a baby recently.  It’s always great to have a sounding board and you will rely on each other more than you know.  Also, every baby is different and on their own timeline.  Don’t worry about comparing your baby to others.”
