“We didn’t really understand how one’s heart can expand in an instant to love someone in such a unique way that you know it will continue to grow. “

Interview with baby Lily’s mom:

Did you find out if you were having a boy/girl? What was mom and dad’s reactions?

“We found out with both our babies.  In fact, we couldn’t wait for the ultrasound to tell us, so we did the blood test as soon as possible.  We figured, it’s a surprise whenever you get the news, so having it sooner is just as good.  When we found out we were having a boy first, I knew I was in for a learning curve because girls were WAY more common in our family (dogs, cousins, etc).  Luckily my husband has four brothers.  He knows boys.  It has been a delight becoming a boy mom.  I love it.  When our second came along, I was pretty sure it was also going to be a boy.  In face, I was so positive that it was a boy, that when the blood test came back that it was a girl, I was convinced they mixed our results up with someone else.  Until the 20 week ultrasound confirmed it was a girl, I was planning on boy #2. What do I know!  But we love having a boy and a girl. This way, we have a complete set!”

What was it like seeing your baby for the first time?

“My first child came after a really long delivery and was swept away after only a minute or two to the NICU (he had amazing care and is fine, a very happy ending), so having a warm, rosy baby laid in my arms was a real treat.  She was already cleaned up and my husband and I got to see such a beautiful little package.  We were joyful and so incredibly happy.”

What has surprised you most about motherhood so far?

“How much you can love something so new and small.  My husband and I have an amazing love story and we thought we knew we would love our baby, but we didn’t really understand how one’s heart can expand in an instant to love someone in such a unique way that you know will continue to grow.  And after seeing how it happens with the first baby, you wonder if it could ever happen again with a second baby.  I mean, I really love our first son.  Like a crazy lady.  How could you love another baby that much?  And you know what? It does happen.”

Any advice for other new moms out there?

“Enjoy each stage.  Don’t rush to the next one.”

Lori and Michael,

It was my pleasure and honor to take these photographs of you and your beautiful family.  This was such a truly special experience meeting your parents and it fills my heart with joy knowing that a photo that I took of your family will be displayed on the exact same mantel that I grew up seeing my own family portrait on every day.  You all are such a blessing and I am so happy that such a wonderful family has made my childhood home your own.  I am so thankful to have met you all and experienced the love your family shares.  Mickey and Lily are two lucky little ones to have such amazing parents and grandparents!

xoxo,
Alicia
