“There’s joy in the unexpected and excitement in the anticipation.”

Interview with baby Hana’s mom:

Did you find out if you were having a boy or girl?  What were mom’s and dad’s reactions?

“I love a good surprise – a random gift, a spontaneous trip, even when it comes to a wedding (yes, the guests at our wedding thought they were coming to celebrate our engagement, no to see us say “I do.”)  There’s joy in the unexpected and excitement in the anticipation.  Our family and friends were not overly surprised when we decided not to find out our baby’s gender.  Everyone waited somewhat patiently, anticipating the arrival of our newest family member and placing their bets on whether we would be welcoming a boy or girl.  And what a joyous moment it was when our baby arrived and we got too announce, “She’s here!”

What was it like seeing your baby for the first time?

“We waited 40 weeks to find out if we were having a boy or a girl so needless to say, we were excited for the big reveal.  When it was finally time for delivery, the doctor came in and started prepping. She inadvertently made several references to our “little boy.”  I thought she must have forgotten in the intensity of the moment that we didn’t know the baby’s gender yet.  Throughout the pregnancy, I had a feeling the baby was a girl so I was a little surprised, but didn’t have time to give it much thought between contractions.  After the final push, they laid our beautiful baby on my chest.  The nurse said something about our sweet girl and I said I thought the doctor had said boy. Sure enough, the nurse showed us our baby was in fact a little girl!  Later when I asked the doctor, she didn’t even realize she was referring to the baby as a boy. She told us that when parents decide to be surprised, she doesn’t find out either.  Well, it certainly was a surprise!”

How did you decide on your baby’s name?

“For us the most difficult part of not finding out the gender was deciding on two names.  We quickly agreed upon a boy name, but the girl name was more difficult.  We went into the hospital with two options for a girl, but once we saw her we knew!  Her name was Hana Grace. Hana (pronounced like the road to Hana in Maui, not pronounced Hannah) is a Japanese name meaning flower blossom and 花 is the Japanese kanji for her name. Hana Grace’s paternal grandparents live in Japan and I love that her name connects her both to part of her heritage (Hana) and our faith (Grace).
